Through the process of making the trailer we had released that the footage captured was not scary enough to be considered a horror film, so it was changed to a romantic thriller.
Thriller music usually has a moderately fast tempo with rock band instrumentation such as electric guitars, bass and drums, and is used to complement the fast action scenes that occur in the footage. It also is played with diegetic sounds of action sound effects such as explosives and gunshots. However because this is a romantic thriller it may have elements of love hinted in the music through more acoustic instruments like strings or acoustic guitar, a slower tempo and a more major tonality.
above is a link a of Mr & Mrs smith trailer which is a film that fits into the romantic thriller category.
The music for the trailer starts off with a kick drum played like a heartbeat which turns into a drum beat layered with sounds of a quiet siren noise and high pitched fast synthnoise. This is also playing while sounds of helicopters, explosives and camera shots are going on as well as the voice-over. However at 0:20 the music changes to a slower more 60s rock style of music, with a guitar playing broken chords. This is used to go with the footage of them brushing their teeth and having a meal to make them seem like a normal loved up couple. However it also has random sound effects of punching and gunshots over the top of the music. It also uses a housestyle drumbeat when it goes to the scene of brad pitt in counselling(0:38).
The music changes again at 0:59 to a spanish tango to go with the scene of the two at a restaurant and dancing, and to show the romantic passionate side of the trailer through the music. However it also still has cutaway scenes of the two with guns which is accompanied with diegetic sounds of them shooting to remind you of its action thriller qualities. At 1:14 it goes back to the fast paced action music which uses drums, guitars, organ and midi instruments to go with the scenes of Brad and Angelina fighting and shooting at each other. Towards the end the music gets more texture with synth melodies being played over the top as the action scences change faster until the last scene of Brad Pitt ticking.
The music in this trailer is useful to look because it shows an example of how to compose for the merged genre romantic-thriller and how to conote elements of love and action through the music.
